About Ridgetop Refuge

I once owned a little cabin tucked into the mountains of North Georgia. It was in Helen, in White County. I bought it back in 2007 and sold it in 2019 after my divorce. Even then, something in me refused to let the dream die. I still longed for a place that felt like home, only this time I knew I wanted it higher up, where the air was sharper, the views more expansive, and the quiet felt like it belonged only to me.

For over a year I searched. I spent quiet evenings on LandWatch and Zillow, slowly building a spreadsheet that captured everything that truly mattered: the perfect acreage, the right price, whether an HOA would tie my hands, the minimum square footage I would need, and, most importantly, whether I could park my RV on the land while I built. That RV was going to be my home during construction, and I wanted every detail to feel intentional, not rushed.

Then, in the summer of 2022, life handed me the perfect excuse to explore. I was driving to Hickory to see a client, and when the meeting ended I kept going west toward Waynesville. That single day I looked at thirteen properties. The last one was the one I almost did not have the energy to see.

But I did.

Maybe it was the soft late-afternoon light spilling across the ridge, or maybe it was the gentle exhaustion that made everything feel a little more magical. Whatever it was, the moment I stepped onto the land I knew. The home site opened to sweeping views both east and west, the kind that make you catch your breath. The top of the ridge sat just right, so the driveway could curve naturally off the road and arrive at the house like it had always belonged there. It felt accessible, peaceful, and completely mine.

In November of that year I made an offer, and the real journey began — the one that would bring me here to this beautiful cabin in Bryson City, North Carolina. Every nail, every beam, every sunset I watch from the ridge reminds me that sometimes the best chapters start right after you think the story is over.

NC law prohibits owner-built properties from renting for one year after CO. That year will be used for punch lists, landscaping, and letting the place breathe. Friends and family are welcome before then — just leave a note in the guest book.
